Points of Interest - Activities

On this page we would like to offer some suggestions for sightseeing and activities upside the conference.

Activities

·        A famous destination is Zeche Zollverein. The once largest and most powerful coal mine in the world is now home to several event locations, restaurants and museums, such as the Ruhr Museum with permanent exhibition on the history, nature and culture of the Ruhr region as well as changing special exhibitions, or the red dot design museum.

·        Further recommended sights are Villa Hügel (home of the industrialist Krupp family from 1873 to 1945 with a park and permanent exhibition, at the moment a light installation)

·        as well as the Essener Dom in the city center of Essen.

·        For a visit to museum and exhibitions we suggest also the Museum Folkwang with several permanent and temporary art exhibitions.

·        For outdoor activities you can visit the Grugapark, with 60 hectares area the “Green heart of the city”,

·        or the lake Baldeneysee in the south of Essen where there is the possibility for walks, hides and/or boat trips.

·        In the evenings there are several opportunities for cultural activities to find in theaters and concerts,

·        the “Lichtburg” - Germany's largest movie palace

·        or the varieté theater G.O.P., not far from the University campus.

In nearby cities within the Ruhr region we can recommend

·        in Duisburg the “magic mountain” Tiger & Turtle

·        or one of the most popular natural and cultural landscape parks Landschaftspark Nord.

Furthermore, there are two interesting current exhibitions:

·        "Das zerbrechliche Paradies" (The fragile paradise) in the Gasometer Oberhausen

·        and Phoenix des Lumières, Immersive experience in Dortmund.

Lunch

For lunch breaks the following places are available:

·        The Mensa in building T01 (tables are reserved). Card payments only!

·        Food mall in and restaurants around the shopping center “Limbecker Platz” reachable in 10 minutes by foot.

Evenings/Diner

If you like to go out in the evening and/or eat we can recommend:

·        in the city of Essen Rosemarie and several locations around the Kennedyplatz, for example Leo's Casa.

·        in Rüttenscheid: Odyssia and Stoffwechsel.
