Dresden - city of art and science

The city of Dresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony. With more than 555,000 inhabitants it is among the largest cities in Germany and it is world renowned for its cultural heritage. Dresden is also a centre of science. More than 15 Helmholtz-, Leibnitz-, Fraunhofer- and Max-Planck institutes, 4 Museums and libraries and 3 universities make up the research alliance “Dresden Concept” headed by the Technische Universität (TU) Dresden. As for student numbers, the TU is one of the top-ten German Universities, it is Germany’s largest engineering school and since 2012 it is one of 11 universities which have been awarded excellence status in the nationwide Exzellenzinitiative. The research strength of TU Dresden shows in various national (No 3 in overall grant income, No 6 in the DFG grant ranking) and international statistics (No 156 in the Times Higher World Universities, No. 79 in the Reuters “Most innovative universites”)

Dresden is one of Germany’s top tourist destinations. The Baroque city centre with the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Semper Opera with the Staatskapelle Orchestra, and the Residential Palace is world-famous, over 50 museums and more than 30 theatres provide an unparalleled density and variety of cultural attractions. The city is often called 'Florence at the Elbe' which refers to the abundance of its cultural and historic heritage and the strong Italian influence on its art and architecture.
